Information About the SCSUT Chemistry Placement Test
Information About the SCSUT Chemistry Placement TestMany students who are entering the College of Science and Technology (SCSUT) need to take the SDSU Chemistry Placement Test. This is a mandatory process that will allow students to compete with other students on their placement. Students who make it through will be able to compete against students from other institutions for awards and scholarships. The SDSU Chemistry Placement Test is considered to be one of the most difficult test that any student has to take for admission into the SCSUT. It is a lot different than other entrance exams like the GMAT, MCAT, and ACT, which have common written tests. The SDSU's test is a more challenging verbal reasoning test that will actually test a student's ability to think logically and come up with the best solution to the problem. A student's knowledge of the subject is also needed in order to score well. This is because the test will include several scenarios where the question is not directly related to the subject matter. Questions can also require more abstract questions that require an individualized thinking ability.Another important aspect to remember is that there is a math requirement on the test as well. Students need to score higher than a 80% to pass. For example, a student with a total score of 64 will only be able to get a 64 out of 60. Of course, if a student gets a perfect score, they will be able to attend an all-day seminar to better prepare them for future college courses. The test will include multiple choice questions and a paper and pencil timed test. Students are required to solve a problem using their own logic, problems should also be solved in groups and for correct answers, students must do the problem without using the help of external resources. The best advice to give students who are taking the testis to take the test early, so that they will have time to study and prepare for the test. Students should also find out what sort of materials are b eing tested on the test. This will allow students to know what materials they can use to effectively pass the test. Those who have scored poorly on the test before being encouraged to continue to apply in the SCSUT in order to improve their scores. However, if students want to guarantee a good grade for their test, then they should also ensure that they do not have any problems with their test scores. This will allow them to avoid any disciplinary actions for cheating, cheating, or excessive writing on the test.

Know, Like, Trust The Key to Creating Your Competitive Advantage - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Know, Like, Trust The Key to Creating Your Competitive Advantage - Introvert Whisperer Know, Like, Trust: The Key to Creating Your Competitive Advantage Why does one kid get picked first for playing a game at school? Is it because theyre the most popular? Is it because theyre the best at playing the game? Yes to both. Why does this same person always get picked first, or is at least among the first to be picked? Because they have a competitive advantage. Understanding what it takes to create a competitive advantage for your career is important. Just like getting picked to be on a team, you want to be picked for promotions and opportunities. You want to be one of those people other people think of when they want to have âjust the right person. That person could be you. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) What Is a Competitive Advantage? Businesses talk about competitive advantage all the time. As a manager of your career, you can learn from their thinking on this topic. In a business setting, a competitive advantage is a condition or attribute that allows the business to outperform or in some way distinguish itself from the competition. Some examples: Starbucks competitive advantage is clearly that they are everywhere. You can argue their coffee is the competitive advantage, and maybe it contributes, but itâs hard to compete as a coffee retailer against Starbucks, who is located in grocery stores, department stores and is on every other block in some cities. Definitely a competitive advantage. Apple has maintained competitive advantage by being the first to innovate a graphic user interface followed by various forms of computing ranging from cell phones to tablets to laptops and computers. Other companies have been running this past decade simply to try to catch up. In other words, a competitive advantage can be as simple as being the first one to do something, the one to offer the best price, or a combination of alluring attributes. If we look at the example of the kid getting picked first, this kid was well liked and had a noteworthy skill set. Itâs possible their advantage could have been just one of those two attributes. When you look around you, who has the competitive advantage, and what is it about them that has created this condition? If you answered, âBecause the boss likes them,â you might think that situation is a complete mystery, but itâs really not. Sure, the boss might really like them, but theres a reason for this, and you can do a lot to ensure the same status for yourself. If youve ever heard of the term know, like, trust, it can help you form your plan for creating a competitive advantage. (More about that in a minute.) Why a Competitive Advantage Is Important for Introverts Iâm sure youâve noticed the cultural âdarlingsâ are the extraverted people. Theyre certainly more noticeable and the standard all of us are measured by. For us Introverts, we donât have this built-in competitive advantage. We have to work a bit harder to simply keep up with others, much less stand out or have any competitive advantage. If youve failed to help others understand what makes you distinct from those around you, you are failing your career. You may also be failing those people because they canât use or benefit from your capabilities. Failure to create a competitive advantage means you will not get ahead, not get promotions, will struggle with the job search and will feel completely under-appreciated. You could add lost income to this list because if youre slow to get promoted, you will be slow to get increases in your paycheck. Any one of these issues is significant enough to warrant your attention, but most people who donât create competitive advantage for themselves suffer from all of these problems. I might add that when youre repeatedly facing these problems, it will ultimately change who you are. Itâs hard to stay positive and enjoy life when the biggest part of how you spend your time is deflating you each and every day. Now, back to the whole concept of know, like, trust The Anatomy of Know, Like, Trust 1. Know Once again, we can learn from business concepts and apply them to our career. Keep in mind itâs people who do business with people, which means this concept is really all about how people relate to each other. This first part of this equation (know) is about helping other people to know you. You need to help other people understand your skills, your strengths and your values. This is the recipe for what makes you unique. Aside from simply knowing that juicy list of attributes, we all want to know whatâs in it for me? Yes, we are all self-centered, as much as we try to deny it. The people you come in contact with, especially at work, need to know how you can help them. If you havenât educated those around you, you will get ignored and, from there, the whole cascade of issues I mentioned previously will be your reality. The reason you must start this process with know is because until someone understands what you bring to the party, itâs impossible to like or trust you. 2. Like Think about this for a minute: What kind of gravitational pull does someone have when you donât like them? How supportive are you of them? More than likely, you run the other way to avoid people like this. You are not likely to do anything to help or support a person you donât like, much less do anything other than the bare minimum to interact with them. Even if you donât dislike another person and are neutral about them, these same questions apply. No one goes out of their way to support or help another person who is a blank slate to them emotionally. All of this means there is good reason to have someone like you and become emotionally invested in you (and vice versa). Itâs also important to point out that when you like someone, youre more apt to pay attention to them and cut them some slack when they mess up. We become more invested in people we like and want to see things go well for them. This doesnât mean you have to set out to turn everyone into your BFF, because that wouldnât happen anyway. It simply means that as you help people to know you, you should also be engaged in finding a real connection with them. 3. Trust Trust is a foundational characteristic of all successful relationships. It is the reliance we place in another person based on their integrity, strengths, values and reliability. When you canât trust another person, you inherently question their motives and behavior. Your distrust becomes the lens through which you view them. It is possible to like a person but not trust them, which is why your competitive advantage must be founded in all three characteristics. If only 2 of the 3 exist, you really donât have the conditions necessary for forming a competitive advantage. People can know, understand and take advantage of your skill sets, but if they donât like or trust you, they will stop short right there. They wonât refer people to you, they wonât make a case for promoting you and theyll have second thoughts if opportunities crop up for which youre qualified. Trust can be a very fragile thing as it can be destroyed by only one bad act. Restoration of trust takes time and consistent behavior to restore and, even then, can be not fully rebuilt. How to Create Know, Like, Trust (and Build Your Competitive Advantage) You have complete control over how this should be orchestrated. Heres how to do it: Creating Know Communication â" This isnt always a strong suit of Introverts, but you can still mater it. Its really about looking for opportunities to update, share and help others. You donât have to turn into a blabbermouth, but you do need to freely offer up information and make it easy for others to get it from you. Focus â" What you focus on is how people come to know you. If you want to be known a certain way, then focus on that thing by talking about it and doing whatever it is. For instance, if you want to be known as a social media guru, then learn it, do it and help others to do it. Consistency â" If you only occasionally do the other two items, people wonât know what to make of you. You have to be consistent. Being consistent also is foundational to building trust as it shows others they can rely on you and know what to expect. Creating Like You might think liking someone is magical or organic, and while that does take place, it also has certain qualities you can replicate. People are more attracted to other people and like them when you: Are warm and inviting. Smile at others; it shows that you re open and friendly. Are humorous. People like people who have a good sense of humor and can easily laugh and enjoy life. Look at them. Itâs hard to feel a connection with someone who really wonât look you in the face. Show interest. Strange how this works. People like people who like them. The best way to show interest is to ask questions and become engaged with the person youre talking with. Find commonality. When youre asking questions, look for points of commonality between you and the other person. Itâs easier to engage with someone when you have a few things in common. Obviously, you have work in common already itâs your job to find other things as well. Support them. When you offer to help someone, especially with your skills, it not only reinforces your competitive advantage, but you build an all-important relationship. Creating Trust Assuming you got the message about consistency, youve probably begun to established trust with other people at work. This, of course, assumes youre a person who operates with integrity and honesty as their core values. The biggest challenge you have now (which might not be that much of a challenge for you) is to do nothing to mess up that impression. In Summary Know, like, trust is the backbone to your competitive advantage and you need a competitive advantage if you are to succeed in life and in your career. (By the way, these same pearls of wisdom also apply to our Extraverted counterparts out there, but donât share this with them. Use this advice as your own secret weapon, saved only for the Ambitious Introvert.) What steps can you take to create know, like trust and build your competitive advantage today? How To Write A Resume For Grad School Applications
How To Write A Resume For Grad School Applications You may be asked to submit a resume or a Curriculum Vitae (CV), depending on the type of grad school program to which youre applying. Typically, writing a resume for grad school applications demonstrate your academic credentials, like research/awards earned, as well as your professional experience, although there is a tremendous amount of overlap. Generally, PhD and academic-based programs require CVs, and other grad programs ask for resumes. If you want to be a teacher, youll write a CV, and if you want work professionally, youll write a resume. But, make sure you know exactly which one youre supposed to write. Contact your school if necessary to confirm, as an error will likely automatically disqualify you. Your grad school resume is one of the keyfactors in your grad school applicationprocess. Most schools look at your GRE score and undergrad grades first; then move on to your resume, application essay, and interview. See more on how to improve your GRE score and improving your graduate school application. Graduate School Application Resume Checklist Contact Information Your name, email address, phone number. Personal Statement What are your goals for attending the graduate program? List of Research Projects Describe relevant research projects to which you've contributed. Work Experience List out prior jobs you've held, particularlythose relevant to the field of study. Undergraduate Education Detail your undergraduate degree and major. Additional Skills E.g. Computer skills, foreign languages, any other skills relevant to the program. Interests Describe additional activities or passionsthat may be relevant to the graduate program. While the above checklist is a handy tool to keep yourself organized, be sure to review each of those tasks in more detail below... Start a new resume for your grad school application Most students use previous resumes from internships or jobs for grad school. And thats exactly why most fall flat. You need to tailor your resume specifically to the grad school program youre applying for. If you mash it together, it will be painfully obvious.. Grad school personal statement What are you going to do in your career? Be a practicing psychologist? Engineer cars? Build computers? You need to directly state this in your personal statement and then elaborate on it throughout your resume. But, you need to say something more interesting than just I will build cars. Add in how youll help solve the energy crisis by creating fuel-efficient hybrids, or how youre interested in driver/passenger safety. The more focused you can be, the better. Examples: Energy expert who will use Stanfords Engineering Graduate Program to help solve the global oil crisis by creating more fuel efficient automobiles. Safety expert who will use Stanfords Engineering Graduate Program to save more lives by engineering safer automobiles. At this point, all you have to do is prove your statement, and youre in. Dont use summary/objective statement It will feel too immature. Instead, use a personal statement described above. Research applicable to grad school If you havent completed a research project, its time to start. Take your personal statement and create a research project. For example, something on alternate energy sources for cars, or opportunities for improved safety. But, if you have completed research, then direct your entire resume around it. If you researched the psychological effects of learning and found students learn best in one-on-one tutoring scenarios; then use that as your personal statement/theme. List everywhere you have been published (if applicable). Work experience You need to do more than just list your previous work experience. You have to use it to prove your personal statement. So, if you interned or worked professionally as an engineer, dont just list what you did. Make it prove your personal statement and sell it. If all you did at your internship was Google alternate fuel methods in cars, you still need to find a way to sell it. Heres how: Example: Explored opportunities for improved fuel efficiency with solar power, natural gas, and other resources in Toyota automobiles. Plant is still considering discovered opportunities, pending government legislation. Education prior to grad school Emphasize your work experience first, but you will still need one sentence stating what your degree was, when you graduated and your GPA. Then, describe the clubs or organizations you were in and what you accomplished. Try to relate this back to your theme, if possible. Example: Created blueprints for a fully-functional automobile that would reduce gas consumption by 20% through The Ohio State University Engineering club [or class you attended]. Volunteer work Just like research, if you dont have any, its time to start! Interests If youve done something cool like biking across America, include it here. Grad schools want to know who you are, and this gives your resume a personal touch. Applying to grad school can feel overwhelming: the GRE, resumes, interviews, applications, letters of recommendation and your head starts spinning. Algebra Is Not As Tough As The Myth Goes About It
Algebra Is Not As Tough As The Myth Goes About It 0SHARESShare Algebra is a branch of Math that discusses the values of unknown numbers through variables and explains various Math concepts thereby. Many shopping adventures and prudent purchases are based on math concepts and it is applied extensively in many subjects. Still, many do not have the courage to take up the subject due to their preoccupied thoughts about it and the fears they have developed about the subject right from their primary level of schooling. Reasons for studentsâ fears about Algebra classes Students feel a tad frightened when they enter the realm of Algebra for the fact that they face letters in the place of numbers and need to deal with them in different sums. It is a learning environment where students enter from primary to middle school- a new ambiance with everything different around them. Despite their attempts in Pre-Algebra, they might feel alien in Algebra classes and thus they lack in the motivation and courage to do Algebra. It is but a natural tendency to feel shrunken on one or two failing attempts in the subject making the students withdraw into shelves of fear in Algebra classes. This becomes obvious in high school learning with math and this may hinder their taking up future courses at an advanced level in college. So far it went about the negative feelings about Algebra learning in the minds of pupils. But such a subject which has a vast coverage of usage in life and academics should not be neglected on petty grounds and it needs some sort of solution to come out of the crucial junctures students face in their math classes. Online tutoring services source out suitable tutors for students who are jittery about their Algebra classes. Tutor Pace renders Algebra to help at affordable tutoring rates for students to utilize and come out with a positive outlook on math classes and try out Algebra homework without any mental agitation. A Beginners Guide to the Triangle, Percussions Most Misunderstood Instrument.
A Beginnerâs Guide to the Triangle, Percussionâs Most Misunderstood Instrument. Everything You Need to Know about the Triangle (the Percussion Instrument). ChaptersWhat is the Triangle? Some Triangle Performances You Should Know. What You Need to Know to Play the Triangle.Do You Need a Triangle Teacher? The triangle is a musical instrument that gets a bit of a bad rap. Itâs developed the reputation for being really easy, sort of gratuitous, and not exactly very interesting at all. However, this is not really very fair at all â" as it is not in the least bit true. Rather, triangles â" believe it or not â" are actually really important instrument with a long and illustrious history. They are not just kidsâ toys or instruments for beginner percussionists at all. Here, weâre going to look at some of the most important aspects of the triangle â" from its history to its central techniques, from some famous triangle performances to the places where you can find yourself a triangle teacher. Weâll look, in fact, at everything that a beginner needs to play the triangle. And you might not think it, but thereâs a lot to know about the instr ument. So, letâs get cracking. And, as a percussion instrument, it is struck â" most commonly with a metal beater, to give the instrument a bright, ringing tone. Like the marimba and the xylophone, the triangle is an idiophone â" or an instrument that, when struck, vibrates as a whole.Something that you may have noticed is that the triangle is not quite a full triangle. Rather, one of the corners is missing.Thereâs a reason for this. If the instrument was a full triangle, its being struck would give a single pitch. However, thatâs not quite what happens with a triangle as it is. Rather, a triangle produces lots of overtones, or harmonics â" which gives the instrument its distinctive sound. The triangle itself aside, you will need what is conventionally known as a âtriangle holderâ too â" a loop from which the triangle is suspended â" so that you donât mute the instrumentâs resonance. Now, apart from in the classroom, youâll actually find the triangle in a lot of different musical contexts. In samba music, in a lot of Brazilian traditional music, and in classical music too. And, by the way, weâd say that if Brahms is happy to put the triangle to use, there is no reason why you should think itâs d aft yourself.A Brief History of the Triangle. So why does this instrument even exist? What has caused something so simple â" and objectively so limited â" to be found in different genres all over the world? The answer, actually, is quite interesting, as it goes back for hundreds and hundreds of years. The first known reference to a triangle comes from the tenth century, when it is seen in a book manuscript. Since then, images of a triangle are seen in medieval editions of the Bible, in stain-glass windows, and in a lot of Christian iconography. Indeed, according to some sources, the triangle is only beaten by the cymbal as the most common instrument played by angels in religious images.Again, this would seem to us like further support for the fact that maybe the triangle isnât such a useless instrument after all. It has been around for potentially a thousand years! From these religious origins, the triangle began to be incorporated into European orchestral works in the eighteenth ce ntury, by composers like Brahms, Mozart, and Liszt. This resurgence of interest in the instrument was apparently due to the fact that Turkish musicians who were popular at the time used the instrument a lot. Moreover, as we mentioned, the instrument became popular in styles of Brazilian music â" including samba and forró.Are there Different Types of Triangle? As with many percussion instruments, the triangle is not just a single thing. Rather, it comes in all different shapes and sizes.Triangles tend to come in a standard size of five inches, yet they also come in six inches, seven inches, and eight. The different size will affect the sound that the instrument produces: larger ones will be louder, yes, but they will produce lower pitches, owing to the differences in vibration.Sometimes, triangles can come with a stand â" but more often they are played with a holder or string loop as we discussed above. These arenât even strictly necessary, as we shall demonstrate below. The very o ld â" weâre talking medieval â" types of triangles would have had rings attached to the bottom side of the instrument. When the triangle was struck, these rings would jingle almost like a tambourine. And whilst this sounds cool, you donât really find these at all anymore.Find out about different types of percussion instruments! The triangle goes back for centuries. (Image from the Fact Site)Some Triangle Performances You Should Know.To demonstrate to you that the triangle is not simply a joke instrument or a toy, it is worth looking at some places where it has been put to extraordinary use. And, as youâll see, these create an amazing effect without which their pieces of music would be severely lacking.Johannes Brahms â" Symphony #4 (Third Movement)One of the most famous uses of the triangle in classical music is in the third movement of Brahmsâs Fourth Symphony. Throughout this triumphant, joyful movement, the triangle contributes a strange, ethereal effect that adds atmosphere to the piece. And if you have seen any video of an orchestra performing this piece, you will have noticed the look of concentration on the triangle playerâs face.Franz Liszt â" Piano Concerto No. 1 (Second Movement)Mocked once upon a time as a âTriangle Concertoâ â" due to the fact that the triangle features heavily â" L isztâs first piano concerto is an astonishing piece.Lead, in a sense, by the triangle, the second movementâs second part is full of frantic piano lines and our percussion instrumentâs constant presence.Sérgio Mendes Brasil â66 â" Casa ForteWe said that a considerable amount of Brazilian music features frequent use of the triangle. An example of this is in Sérgio Mendesâs âCasa Forteâ, a wild bossa nova track with a strong percussion section. Here, the triangle is heard in its different style: not just with its piercing ring, but used in its percussive mode too.Find out how to play the marimba - or how to play the xylophone! What You Need to Know to Play the Triangle. So, you have heard some famous uses of the triangle. Itâs not time to pick up your own instrument and get playing yourself. At this point youâll see that it is not such a straightforward technique. Here, we are going to look at three techniques: the basic strike, the roll, and the muted bossa nova tech nique as heard in âCasa Forteâ.Holding the Triangle. Before you start to play, youâll need to attach the triangle holder. Loop the string onto the open corner and pull the string onto the first closed corner you reach. Now, if you are right-handed, hold the triangle in your left hand with the open corner pointing leftwards.Striking the Triangle. As you are holding the triangle with the holder, you can now practise striking the instrument. As you would with a drum, you need to strike it with the beater and then return your hand to its original position â" otherwise it will not resonate. It is best to strike it towards the closed corner to the right of your hand. The Triangle Roll.Once you have got the basic strike down, you can try the triangle roll. This is where you put the beater inside one of the closed corners of the triangle and quickly strike at either side. This will produce a jangling effect that recalls a drum roll.Muting the Triangle. Now, for the more rhythmic technique, you want to unloop the triangle holder and place the top corner of the triangle onto your left handâs index finger. It should balance on that finger so that your left handâs other fingers are able to move. Now you can use those free fingers to mute and unmute the triangle during rhythms â" just as they do in Brazil.Find out how to play the tambourine - or how to play the steel hang! We use the triangle in orchestras too!Do You Need a Triangle Teacher? As with any musical instrument, a decent triangle teacher would help you improve your technique. However, you are going to find very few â" if any â" teachers that only work with the triangle. As the triangle takes its place amongst the other instruments of the percussion section, your best bet is to find a general percussion teacher. One of the best places to find one of these is with Superprof. We have a huge number of tutors available for tutoring across the world â" either in person or online. Just search for a percussion tutor!
Problem Solving Skills for Students
Problem Solving Skills for Students Like life, school is a journey filled with twists and turns. Problems arise, but students who learn to confront them early will be happier and more resilient as they approach college and the real world. Here is a framework to help you build your students problem-solving skills: Start with identification. In assignments or projects, teach students to identify the task in front of them, then define the problem(s) theyre trying to solve. Articulate possible solutions. An important part of the problem-solving process is brainstorming solutionsas many options as possible. Weigh the options. Encourage your students to consider the ideas theyve come up with: what are the possible problems with each? Which alternatives are most and least feasible? Create an action plan. Before diving in, students should decide what theyll do first to work toward solving the problem. This should involve thinking through the strategy, steps and desired outcomes The execution phase is where your students should attempt to try out a solution by carrying out the steps that they defined in their action plan. To build on their learning, they should evaluate their progress as they go. Lastly, its time for evaluation. Encourage your students to reflect on their efforts, problem-solving process, what worked and what did not. They might decide to go back to the drawing board if the problem didnt get solved as planned. One of the best ways to prepare your students for college and the real world is to teach them how to identify and solve problems on their own. Regular practice doing so will help them be more confident and independent no matter what academic challenges they face. See how Huntington Learning Center can help your students succeed.
